We often marvel
at the amount of money flowing into the Premier League thanks to the
eye-watering amounts involved in the various TV contracts, but here's
another reminder that there's plenty of new money elsewhere in the
world, too, especially in China. (Newly promoted Hebei CFFC just signed Gervinho, for example.)
Chelsea midfielder Ramires has agreed personal terms ahead of his £25million move to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning. The 28-year-old flew to Jiangsu's training camp in Malaga on Tuesday night for his medical ahead of the deal being confirmed.
That's £25m for a 28-year-old
squad player, who quite likely will be past his prime soon (if he isn't
already), especially considering that so much of his game is built on
physical fitness and prowess. Chelsea paid just £18m for him back in
2010, though 20 is the new 30 when it comes to transfer fees nowadays.
Factor in five and a half years' worth of wages, and any notion that
Chelsea are turning a "profit" on Ramires is sorely misguided. Still,
if the £25m is anywhere near what we're getting for the Hero of
Barcelona, we once again have to tip our caps to the Chelsea negotiating
team.
Jiangsu are managed by former
Chelsea right back Dan Petrescu. They finished only 9th in the league
last season, but won the Chinese FA Cup, beating Demba Ba, Tim Cahill, and Momo Sissoko in the two-legged final.
