Ciara Turns a Nigerian Street Into Her Own Dance Floor
It’s perhaps an understatement to say that Ciara
can turn any locale into her own dance floor. Whether levitating in a
desert or elevating en pointe like a trained ballerina, the dexterous
performer has always been quick to jump to her feet and showcase her
gravity-defying, backbreaking moves. And from the chain of Instagram videos
the “I Bet” singer posted this morning, it appears she’s made the
streets of Lagos, Nigeria, the new venue for her next party! In town for
a recent performance, Ciara teamed up with a band of local dancers to
learn the authentic Naija way to wind her hips and dip it low to the
thumping beats of Iyanya’s “Kukere.”
A quick study, Ciara expertly clipped her hips, twisted her bare
feet, and threw her arms about in the middle of the road, in perfect
harmony with her backup dancers. Even the windswept folds of her custom
plunging tunic moved seamlessly throughout the number. Later she
described the traditional African dance as more like a “feeling”—one
that we suspect will have a lot to do with the new album she just
announced she’s recording. No matter what it brings, it’s clear Ciara’s
already got the moves down.
